The International İstanbul Theater Festival presents the finest examples of Turkish theater as well as internationally acclaimed theater companies and dance groups. Carefully selected companies and artists who participate in the Festival stimulate the world theater scene with their impressive and, at times, radical creations. Whether modern or post-modern, various impressive forms of contemporary theater come within the scope of the International İstanbul Theater Festival.
The extraordinary versatility of the contemporary theater scene is reflected in the Theater Festival and creates a great impact on young audiences. Seminars, conferences, workshops and exhibitions constitute other forms of dialogue between the public and the visiting artists.
In recent years, the International İstanbul Theater Festival has produced experimental works in collaboration with Turkish companies and international festivals. The Festival is planning to take a further step and invite world renowned directors to İstanbul to produce works on a particular theme with Turkish artists and theaters. The encounter between the visiting directors and Turkish artists will strengthen the links between the various cultures and encourage the opening of new paths in the intercultural theater scene.
15th International İstanbul Theatre Festival, was the host of an extensive international theatre meeting in 2006: the 4th Theatre Olympics. Aiming to emphasize the importance of theatre in bringing together diverse cultures, creating fields of discussion and reinforcing and developing dialogue, the 4th of the Theater Olympics' theme was "Beyond the Borders".
