Right on Eminönü square, Hamdi is a hot favourite among Istanbul natives, particularly business lunchers and carniverous fans of south-eastern Turkish food. Hamdi serves meat 'alaturca' at its very best, grilled to succulent perfection on the mangal. The restaurant occupies four floors, but the top one is the most memorable.

Situated in an enclosed glass terrace, it offers sweeping views of the Golden Horn and Beyoglu. It's particularly lovely in the summer, when the windows are opened completely. Otherwise, opt for the curious Oriental Saloon on the first floor, kitted out with cuckoo clocks and startled nymphs.

If today is going to be long day in Istanbul, then what a better way to start the day at Saray, with its incompatible honey and cream, fresh bread and a hot cup of tea, a bowl of their legendary chicken soup or a delicious savory pastry which thousands of natives of Istanbul who already know of the “SWEET SECRET”During the 1860’s, Kerem Cavu? together with his brothers opened up in Istanbul’s F?nd?kl? region their first milk pudding establishment putting their “Sweet Secret” into operation and adding “Sweet excitement”.

This sweet excitement continued when years later his grandchild Hüseyin Topba? in 1935 opened his f?rst pudding shop in Kas?mpa?a and later in 1949 the dream became a reality with the opening of Beyo?lu Saray in ?stiklal Caddesi.Beyo?lu, during this period was the preferred area for its shopping and entertainment.

It was a dream for people to consider opening any establishment in order to compete with the infamous Lebon and Markiz. However, with Hüseyin Topba? and his ‘sweet secret’ Saray became an establishemt where people went during any time of the day for something to eat, drink and converse freely and this turned into a favorite stop for people at any time of the day.During the 50’s Hüseyin Topba? created his exclusive menu of eggs, chicken and puddings, and from there on Saray has increased their selection to over a 100.

Everyday milk is delivered from a dairy farm working specifically for them, delicious pastry sweets, freshly baked savory pastries throughout the day, mouth-watering salads and the great Saray speciality of chicken on rice served with Saray’s own special yoghurt. Saray has become the preferred place to be at any time of the day for one of a hundred reasons…

Today, everyone has become familiar with the ‘Sweet Secret’ that Hüseyin Topba? created. “We will not present to our customers anything that we will not take pleasure in eating” is a motto that still stands strong today. His children have always remained faithful to his secret.

During the course of a day customers will come to Saray with friends, acquaintances and loved ones and leave with the sweet taste well imprinted in their mouths. They have always preferred the Saray taste with the feeling of being at home and receive the standard of traditional service as it should be.

In a world that is changing fast, to keep traditions in line with expectations and moving times, the children of Hüseyin Topba? have successfully accomplished this with the secret that he has passed onto them. The inheritance that has been left to them has always been their guide, has now taken greater strides with the new branches that have been demanded to be opened.

Beyo?lu Saray has now new Saray’s added to them: Te?vikiye Saray in 1982, Osmanbey Saray in 1984, Galleria-Ataköy Saray in 1988, Saray Manhattan Pizza in 1991, Fatih Saray in 2004 Maltepe Carrefour Saray in 2005 Saray Kanyon Shopping Mall in 2006, Saray Bagdat Caddesi and Saray Feneryolu in 2006, and shortly to be opened in 2007 is Saray Istinye Park.A tradition that was started by Kerem Çavu?, passed on to his grandson Hüseyin Topba?' and from then on to his children and grandchildren continues today.

Yesterday mothers held their children’s hands and came to Saray today those children come along with their grandchildren taking great pleasure in introducing the traditions of Saray and its unequalled pleasures.Through entrepreneurial drive, enthusiasm, attention to quality and detail the Saray family truly did achieve the ‘Sweet Secret’ dream.

Finding a kebab restaurant in Istanbul is not hard. There must be thousands of them. But finding the right kind of place, especially if you want to make it a bit more of a meal, can be surprisingly difficult.

Most kebab joints tend to be no-frills, in-and-out places. Some are very good (and we will review a few in the future), but they don’t make for a night out. On the other hand, some of nicer places – where you can find a more extensive menu and, more importantly, drink booze with your dinner – take things too far.
Tuxedoed waiters serving kebab? Griller, please! At the end of the day, we’re still talking about meat on a stick cooked over a fire.Which is what makes Zubeyir – a fantastic grill house in Beyoglu that always seems to be packed with large groups having a very good time – such a refreshing find.
They serve seriously good food, without taking themselves too seriously. The restaurant, which occupies two cozy floors in a historic building near the pedestrian-only Istiklal Cadessi, is dominated by an ocakbas?, a long hearth topped by a copper hood, where the meat is grilled over hardwood coals. It’s a bit like Turkey’s hot and smoky answer to the sushi bar, with a few seats available grillside, where you can watch the chef do his thing.
Meals at Zubeyir usually begin with a round of mezes, brought to your table on a large tray to choose from. Particular standouts are a subtle spread made out of mashed pumpkin and yogurt, as a well as a sublime warm salad made from freshly grilled eggplant, tomato and onion.
The gavur dag? salad – a mix of greens, herbs and tomatoes in a piquant pomegranate molasses dressing – is also worth ordering. From there, it’s on to the kebabs. The standard grill items are all outstanding.
Their Adana kebab – spicy minced lamb – has just the right combination of meat, fat and red pepper. Chicken wings (kanat) and lamb chops (pirzola) are also superbly grilled. Zubeyir also serves up some cuts of meat not found at most kebab joints, such as the tasty tarak (lamb spare ribs), and for the more adventurous, the koç yumurtas?, ram’s testicles (which, we must admit, we have yet to try). It’s not easy to standout in a city filled with kebab restaurants. Zubeyir does it effortlessly.
